Hi WGiCS!
Hope you’ve all had a great first week back at Yale! It was lovely seeing so many of you drop by our booth during the activity bazaar (both familiar and new!!) and we’re so excited to kick-off this year with all of you.
The WGiCS newsletter is your one-stop shop for all up-to-date information on what’s happening in the WGiCS community! Whether it be professional workshops, upcoming social events, or spotlights on amazing WGiCS members and their work, you can find any and all information relating to WGiCS here.
There are a ton of fun events coming up, so here’s what you need to know for this week!
Social Events:
Kick-Off Meeting (Sept 8, 8pm at Humanities Quadrangle on York Street):
The start of WGiCS 2021-2022 is here! Our kick-off meeting is 8pm on Wednesday (tomorrow!!), Sept. 8, at the Humanities Quadrangle. We’re so excited to be meeting all of you in-person, so it’ll be a great opportunity to meet all your wonderful WGiCS peers and get to know one another! At the meeting, we’ll be going over different events we have planned for this year (found on this slideshow), so you definitely don’t want to miss out. We know that the start of a semester can always be overwhelming, so if you’re unable to make it, feel free to reach out to Anna Zhang (anna.zhang@yale.edu) or Kaitlyn Sandor (kaitlyn.sandor@yale.edu) to catch up on any info!
CS Study Groups:
With the semester starting up, we know a lot of you all are considering taking a CS course in your schedule. If you’re looking to meet other WGiCS members in your class, you can join the CS class GroupMe groups here! You’ll be able to study, work together on PSETS (based on your course policy, of course), and most importantly get to know the WGiCS members in your classes :)
Merch Survey:
We have new merch designs! Please fill out this survey by Sept 10 so we can get a good idea of how much merch (and which designs) to order!
WGiCS Wellness Events:
Be on the lookout for WGiCS Wellness events! Here’s what’s coming up:
September 18th - Sunset Hike to East Rock
September 25th - Elm City Farmer’s Market Trip
More to come soon...
Professional Opportunities:
YSEA Grants:
On average, YSEA grants are around $1,000 to fund student research projects on campus and all well-written proposals are accepted. In addition to this, YSEA is committed to helping students without grant writing experience securing funding and will provide mentorship and guidance.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact interns@ysea.org or grants@ysea.org.
More information can be found on our website here or at (https://ysea.org/grants/). We have many grants for both groups and individuals and we want to expand the reach of these grants
Matician Sponsorship:
At Matician, our goal is to save people time and energy by automating mundane tasks inside the home. We believe that sensors and algorithms are finally good enough that we can apply Level 5 Autonomy and mobility in order to reimagine home devices. We are building great products to solve real problems and ship them to the people we love. Our mission-driven and tight-knit group values learning and curiosity in a high-risk, high-reward culture.
We are currently hiring for various roles on our software team such as CV/ML, Firmware, Platform Systems, iOS, and Deep Learning engineers. If any of these interest you please reach out to charlene@matician.com or apply directly online at https://matician.com/careers.
